What is a fetish?
The word fetish originally described an object with special meaning – something that triggers adoration, desire, or fascination. In modern sexuality, the term stands for a sexual preference directed toward specific materials, body parts, situations, or objects. A fetish can be gently playful or deeply rooted – in any case, it is an expression of individual pleasure and fantasy.
The important thing is: A fetish is not a “problem” as long as it is lived out consensually, respectfully, and safely. It shows how diverse human sexuality really is – and that pleasure is allowed to take many forms.
Common fetishes – what many find appealing
Some preferences are widespread and have long been part of general sexual fantasy. These include, among others:
PVC, Leather & Latex

With a Deep Throat Fetish, the focus is less on the reflex and more on the act of deep penetration during oral sex, including control, dominance, or submission.
The gag reflex is often part of the intense physical experience here, but not necessarily the primary focus.
Breath Control aims at playing with air, control, and power and is considered dangerous if practiced improperly or without clear safety rules. Here, it is less about the gag reflex and more about the conscious restriction of breathing – therefore, safety knowledge and consent are absolutely necessary.
Dominance & Submission
Playing with power is one of the oldest sexual BDSM dynamics of all. The so-called Looner fetish – derived from the English word balloon – describes erotic or emotional arousal through balloons. People with this fetish, often called looners for short, do not perceive balloons as toys, but as sensual objects full of tension, sound, and expectation.
Forbidden fetishes – clear boundaries where consent ends
Not every wish or fantasy is allowed to be lived out in reality. Some topics cross moral and legal boundaries – they harm people, animals, or the principle of consent. In the sex-positive scene, the rule is: anything that happens without consent or is associated with the suffering of others is not a fetish – but abuse and a criminal offense. Here are the most important examples:
Pedophilia
Pedophilia describes sexual interest in children or adolescents under the legal age limit. Any act involving minors is punishable and morally unjustifiable. Children cannot give consent – and any form of approach is abuse, not sexuality. There is no “safe” or “acceptable” way to live out this impulse. Professional help is the only right step here.
Zoophilia and Animal Cruelty
Animals also cannot give consent – therefore, any form of sexual act with them is clearly forbidden. In addition to the ethical aspects, this is also about animal welfare, hygiene, and legal consequences. In the BDSM or fetish scene, the use of animal symbolism (e.g., pet play) is purely roleplay and between humans – never with real animals.
Rape & Violence without Consent
Consensual power games or roleplays can be intense and emotional as long as all participants agree beforehand and set clear boundaries. As soon as violence occurs without consent, it is no longer a fetish, but a crime. “Rape play” or similar scenarios are only conceivable in a strictly agreed-upon, safe setting – always with safewords and full control over the possibility to stop.
Necrophilia
Sexual acts or fantasies in connection with corpses are punishable and deeply disrespectful to the dignity of the deceased. This area crosses both moral and psychological boundaries. Anyone who feels such impulses should seek psychological support instead of suppressing or acting on them.
Incest
Sexual acts between close relatives are prohibited by law, as they can exploit power dynamics and emotional dependencies. Here, too, fantasy and reality are two completely different levels – taking the step into real actions violates trust, boundaries, and laws.
Why boundaries are important
Fetish culture thrives on diversity – but also on responsibility. Exploring oneself can be liberating and healing as long as respect for others is maintained. Consent, safety, and ethical behavior are the foundation of any true sexual culture.
The scene itself actively distances itself from people who live out violence or assault under the guise of a “fetish.” Because true freedom in sexuality does not mean doing everything that is possible – but knowing where the boundary of another person’s freedom begins.
