Demisexual

When sexual attraction only happens once things click emotionally

Being demisexual means that sexual attraction doesn’t happen instantly, but only develops once a genuine emotional connection has been established. In short: no heart, no tingle – and that is perfectly okay. While many people are triggered purely physically or visually, it simply works differently for demisexual individuals. They need trust, closeness, and really good vibes before the body even thinks about feeling desire.

Demisexuality belongs to the asexual spectrum, but being demisexual is not the same as being asexual. This is because demisexual people can experience sexual attraction – just later on and not with just anyone.

What does it feel like to be demisexual?

Many demisexual people say that they:

  • rarely find someone “hot at first sight”
  • don’t really care for casual sex or one-night stands
  • only feel sexual tension when they truly trust someone
  • build connections more slowly – but more intensely

It often feels like having a built-in filter that says:
“Wait a second… how do I actually feel about this person?”

Because for demisexuals, attraction doesn’t start with the eyes, but with the heart and the mind.

Why demisexuality makes total sense

In a world full of swipe-left-and-right and “show me your best selfie” dating, it can be incredibly liberating to know:
“I don’t have to find someone sexually attractive right away.”

Demisexuality brings some pretty wonderful benefits:

  • deeper emotional connections before things get physical
  • less pressure to perform immediately or “feel the spark”
  • more honest communication because expectations are clearer
  • stable relationships through more conscious decisions

Many people only realize late in life that they are demisexual – often because they felt somehow “different” in the dating world but never knew why.

Dating as a demisexual person

Dating can be tricky, especially in a culture that celebrates quick matches and spontaneous attraction. But when you’re open about needing time, something magical happens: you attract people who respect exactly that – and the misunderstandings disappear.

A sentence like:
“I need emotional closeness before I feel sexual attraction.”
…suddenly makes dating much more relaxed.

Can S+ or swinger parties still be exciting?

Surprisingly: yes, definitely!

Being demisexual doesn’t automatically mean you have to avoid sexual spaces. Many S+ parties, kink events, or swinger nights offer much more than just pure erotica.

They can be exciting because there you:

  • meet an extremely open community
  • experience creative, playful, and artistic atmospheres
  • find workshops, performances, or mindful cuddling spaces
  • can move freely – without having to perform immediately

Only one thing is important:
→ Many demisexual people enjoy these events without having sex themselves.
They like the energy, the sensuality, and the community vibe – but they maintain their boundaries.

A swinger party doesn’t mean: “You have to have sex.”
A swinger party means: “You can be yourself.”
And that fits demisexual people perfectly.

Myths about demisexual orientation – and why they are nonsense

Myth 1: “Demisexuals are prudes.”
→ Nope. They just need an emotional connection.

Myth 2: “Demisexuality is just a phase.”
→ Also wrong. It is a recognized sexual orientation.

Myth 3: “Demisexuals don’t want sex.”
→ They do, but not with strangers and not immediately.

Conclusion: Demisexuality is a strength, not a limitation

Demisexuality doesn’t mean less desire, but desire experienced differently. People who are demisexual discover sexuality through trust, bonding, and deep emotions. And often, that is exactly what leads to more intense, honest, and sustainable connections. If you are demisexual, you can be proud of it – because experiencing attraction consciously rather than just “blindly” is incredibly powerful.
